Coldspring, Texas New Adventure RV Park and Horse Hotel

Well, this route sucked. It was 4 hours of some back roads alright and rough ones. It even led to signs of a bridge not being high enough. Nice lady at a store said we were ok, just stay in the middle. She was right. The other thing was rain almost the whole way.  Our campground is New Adventure RV Park and Horse Hotel in Cold Spring Texas. Here's the website . The site makes it look a lot better. The place is clean and fairly well kept but the main saving grace is that it is only $39. We were supposed to stay 3 nights but since we're underwhelmed and bad weather is expected Monday, we're leaving tomorrow, Sunday for our January campground in Rockport Texas.  That's it for this stop. We didn't go anywhere.

Natchitoches, LA

Another good backroads trip to Natchitoches, Louisiana and the Pecan Orchard RV Park . We fueled up on the way 57.3 gal $181.23. The park management is interesting. Never saw anyone associated with the park. You reserve and pay on-line. They respond with show up and find the site you like. When you get there the office is never open and you go and pick out a site. That's it. I did text them that we arrived and where we were. They responded with thanks and call if we needed anything. It is a new park with excellent facilities, concrete pads, etc for $53/night.  Natchitoches    We did homework before touring by watching Steel Magnolias, just one of many films shot there. We did drive by some of the sites in the film. It is another neat old town that we didn't get to enjoy much because it was cold and windy and not fun to walk. We did a "windshield tour" except for a good meal at historic Lasyone's Meat Pie restaurant. Neither of us had meat pie but I did go Cajon

Natchez MS/Vidalia LA

Image
31 Dec 2023 Natchez, MS/Vidalia, LA. 5 hours and 291 miles of great back roads  Route  to River View RV Park . It is in Vidalia, Louisiana on the Mississippi River. Natchez Mississippi is on the other side of the river.  It is a very nice park for only $35/night. Amazing. We can watch the boats go by from the RV. We'll be here for 3 nights.  The Mighty Mississippi! Normally you can see the boats go by but the water level is so low that big boats can't travel and the smaller ones are masked by the levee.                                                        We're the last rig on the right.  When we arrived we the park was totally full and so many people were sitting outside looking at the river. Turns out that Natchez puts on a great fireworks show at 6:30 from a barge anchored in the river near the big bridges. It was quite a show and we had front row seats and were done by 7!  This is the office, community room, 1st class laundry, and pool. Never seen one so nice. The v

Truck Stop!!!! Evergreen Alabama

30 December 2023 Evergreen Alabama Sometimes there is no convenient campground where we want to stop. This was the case when we discovered that Love's truck stops has started adding a few RV parking places at their stops complete with all hookups. We're not fans of staying in Walmart lots so this was perfect. And it was. We stayed in site 4. The cost is $43.68 which seems high. The RV section is away from the trucks so it is fairly quiet. All in all, we'd do it again.  Forgot to take pictures.  Web Route  We went 145 miles in 3 hours. We fueled at Love's 28.3gal@$3.78 for $96.23. We also got propane 16.1gal @$3.99 for $71.27.  Since this is a light entry, you might wonder why we don't go further in a day? Because we're senior citizens, don't have jobs, and the trip is not only the destination but the getting there. Many RV'ers have a 3x3 rule (or 4x4): 3 hours a day and parked by 3. We normally don't leave until 10. We'll do a 5 hour if we have

Eufaula Alabama

28 Dec 2023. Eufaula, Alabama.   Another good travel day. We love not being on Interstates!  A short day of 144 miles in 2:45 hours. Fueled at $3.69/gallon; 55.4 gallons; $204.97.  Route We stayed in Lake Eufaula Campground Site 37. Another park that had its glory awhile back. It was a KOA then. But, we liked it. Easy access, clean, well kept and only $35/night. We stayed 2 nights.  Lake Eufaula Campground .   What we really liked was the town. First we had an amazing lunch at Thelma's Kitchen . It says Southern but it was really Soul. Awesome food. Awesome staff.  Then it was the town itself. Nice "main" street with a lot of character and then a long stretch of homes of plantation like homes. Not being selective of which pictures to add (sorry Casey (smile)) since this is just for family/friends. And yes, the statue is of a confederate. Eufaula   These pictures reflect why we like backroads. We would never see this from an Interstate. Another example is the miles and

Johnson Snowbird Winter 2024

27 Dec 2023 This is just an informal blog mainly for our use to help remember stuff for 2025 Snowbird trip. I'm sending a link if you family and friends want to check in now and then. If you do, make a comment (1 word is fine) now and then so we'll know others are following and not slack off. I'll start with Day 1. We escaped the Hickory monsoons on 27 Dec. Using 321 and I-26 we made it to Boss's RV Park in Wrens, GA.  Website  4.5 hours/241 miles. Both highways were great with not much traffic. It is on US-1 and in days past it was probably top notch. It's clean and has all that we need but others may not like it. $46 with military discount is a bit high but we're ok with it.  Maps Timeline Link We never left the campground and were only there 1 night so not much to say.
